  1. Theoretical Education: Gaining in-depth theoretical knowledge in at least one school of therapy - preferably more - and maintaining a lifelong commitment to staying vitally engaged in this field.)
  2. Clinical Practice: Working with as diverse a range of clients as possible under supervision and completing at least one year as an intern in mental health clinics, preferably longer.
  3. Supervision: Receiving supervision for therapeutic work from significantly more experienced therapists qualified to provide educational supervision, for at least the first five years of the profession, preferably longer.
  1. Personal Therapy: Even though not mandatory in every school of therapy, undergoing long-term therapy in a way that allows the therapist to understand better their inner world and therefore their own complexities and vulnerabilities, and to mature emotionally.
  2. Professional Ethics: Acquiring theoretical and clinical competence in professional ethics.

Synthesis

As a therapist gains competence in these five areas over the early years of their career, they gradually move away from being bookish and scholastic or merely imitating their teachers or supervisors. They begin to develop their unique style or synthesis, which they no longer wear like a costume, but like their own skin.

As can be seen from this framework, psychotherapy training is a comprehensive endeavor that spans many years. Undergraduate degrees in fields such as medicine, psychology, psychological counseling, social work, and nursing merely provide a preliminary foundation; psychotherapy training cannot be adequately provided at the undergraduate level. Pursuing a medical specialization in psychiatry or a master’s degree in fields like clinical psychology, clinical social work, or psychiatric nursing should be seen as the first step in psychotherapy training; however, it is certainly not a sufficient one. In addition to this first step, continuing with a doctorate in these fields and/or enrolling in long-term programs offered by professional associations or established therapy schools, as well as maintaining personal therapy and supervision, are essential components of proper psychotherapy training.
